Library Classification and Arrangements of Books

The Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme
Books are arranged on the shelves according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC 23) which groups the fields of knowledge into 10 main classes, namely:

000 – 099 Computer Science, Information & General Works
100 – 199 Philosophy and Psychology
200 – 299 Religion
300 – 399 Social sciences
400 – 499 Language
500 – 599 Science
600 – 699 Technology
700 – 799 Arts and Recreation
800 – 899 Literature
900 – 999 History and Geography

Arrangement of Books

Non-Fiction books are arranged in the shelves from left to right, top to bottom, according to the following:

  • numerically according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) number
  • same class number
  • alphabetically by title, if with the same class and author   number.

Fiction books (Novels particularly in pocketbooks) have no class numbers but they bear the location symbol FC. They are alphabetically arranged on the shelves by author numbers.

Books in the General Collection at the Main University Library have no placemark on their call numbers.

The Card Catalog
The Union Card Catalog is an alphabetical index to the collections of the library. All cards are interfiled following the word by word alphabetical arrangement. These are the following cards:

  1. Author Card
  2. Title Card
  3. Subject Card

Each book in the library normally has three (3) cards, each of which is filed in its corresponding drawer under the appropriate letter of the alphabet.
